The holy Righteous Martyr Marcella of Chios.
While the ancient sources are silent about when the holy Virgin Martyr Marcella of Chios lived, local tradition of Chios and the service written in her honor by Saint Nicephorus of Chios relate that to preserve her chastity from her own father she fled into the mountains, where he caught her, beat her, cut off her breasts, then beheaded her. Rocks and pebbles at the sea-shore where her church stands are dyed red – Eustratiades calls them “pebbles full of congealed blood, which the people scrape off into vessels and they find the healing of every kind of disease.” Additionally on the feast of Saint Marcella, as it says in her service, “the tossing foam of the sea is wondrously seen to be red where thy holy blood aforetime had been shed abroad; and those faithfully taking it, when therewith anointed, are delivered by thy grace from their infirmities.” (Menaion, July 22, page 213)
